Honda Mini Trail CT-70 Buyer`s GuideHow to buy a Honda Mini Trail CT70 There is a certain degree of nostalgia associated with the Honda Mini Trail CT70. Many people have asked me where is the best place would be to pick up a used Honda CT-70 or other mini trail for a nice restoration project. Many people looking to buy Honda Mini Trails had either one as a child or at least knew of them and wanted one. Now there are lots of lucky people who are able to take a solid mini trail off the hands of someone who wasn’t aware of it’s value for dirt cheap. But as these mini trails become more rare, buyers and sellers are becoming more savvy about their transactions. I have put together a quick guide to buying a Honda Mini Trail CT70 that will outline some of the things to watch out for, as well as some places to look and some tips that could save you some money. Before looking for a Honda CT70, you should think of your reasons for making such a purchase. Since someone will likely end up being the luckey rider of your little mini bike, you should think of who that person will be, and how appropriate and suitable the Honda CT70 will be to their riding needs. If it is a small child, it may be a better idea to go with a slightly smaller bike like the Honda Mini Trail z50. If you are someone who is looking for a little bit more speed, another option is the Honda Trail CT90. Personally, as far as Honda Mini Trails go, I have found that the Honda Mini Trail CT70 is suitable to the widest age and weight range. The next thing you will want to think about is how much work you are looking to put into this bike. In most cases this will be a determining factor in how much you will end up paying for the bike itself. For someone willing to put their heart and soul into an entire CT70 restoration project, they might find a suitable bike for as cheap as $200. On the other end of the spectrum, someone buying a near-mint, running, street legal Honda Mini Trail CT70 may be dishing out up to $3000.00. More commonly, you will see everything in between the two scenario’s. Remember, it all depends on what your looking for. It will be crucially important to keep in mind your budget and time availability One mistake I have seen people make again and again is rushing into their purchase. The most common situation I have seen is when someone sees a great deal on a fix’er upper and they jump all over it. Not necessarily a bad idea if you’re looking for just a parts bike. But time and time again these bikes get taken home in two hundred pieces and never get cleaned up and put back together. I would strongly caution you if you are a first time Honda Minitrail CT70 buyer if you come across one of these bikes. It may be wiser to keep your money on hand for when a better bike comes along. The longer you shop around the more you’ll learn about the market and the more likely it will be that you find exactly the bike you are looking for. Of course, when buying a Honda Mini Trail CT70, it would be unwise going into such a purchase to think that youre getting a brand new bike in perfect condition. Even some of the bikes that are in restored and good running condition will at some point require some sort of repair. Remember, these are old bikes, no matter how you look at it. They all have their problems, so do your research and find out what kind of problems you will be likely to run into and make sure you are up for the task. Don’t be afraid to get online and ask other owners questions. Today there are plenty of online Honda Mini Trail communities where people will be glad to help you out, in most cases, with just about any questions you may have. Ready to start your search? Let’s talk about some of the places you can look for some sweet Honda Mini Trail CT70’s. One of the best places to find Honda CT70’s is on eBay. Chances are if you do a search right now you will find anywhere from 3-10 Honda CT70’s in various conditions being auctioned off right now. Ideally, you are going to want to try to find one selling in your area to avoid some of the high costs of shipping an entire motorcycle, but it doesn’t always work out like that. So if you are willing to dig into your pocket for shipping costs (making sure of course that the seller is willing to ship as well), one good tip I have heard is finding a bike that is coming from either the northern United States or Canada. The reason for this being that they will likely have only been driven for the summers only, and stored indoors during the winter. Make sure if you are thinking of buying on eBay to take all the regular eBay precautions like looking into the seller’s history, making sure they have enough positive feedback, ask questions, and be sure their aren’t any hidden catches that you don’t know about. In many cases the seller will either be a professional Honda Mini Trail restoration expert, or someone who has taken on the task of regularly fixing up Honda CT70’s and selling them off in refurbished condition. Another common place for American’s to look online is the local Craig’s list directories, Canadian’s have the local Kijiji sites that are pretty much the equivalent. Doing a simple google search for “Honda CT70 For Sale” will probably return you a ton of results from these two websites from classified ads all over North America. If you get lucky, there may be one in your area that will be just what you’re looking for. Be sure to check your local newspaper classifieds and/or local .forsale newsgroup (if you have one). People often overlook these two resources in their search for a Honda Mini Trail CT70. However, from personal experience I can tell you that these sources offer an untapped resource of CT70 sellers who are disconnected from the Honda Mini Trail community and aren’t aware of it’s value. If you are a shark, buying your bike this way could save you some dough. If you happen to live in a rural community, you may be able to drive around, and, the odd time happen to see a Mini Trail CT70 parked at the end of someone’s driveway with a for sale sign up in front of it. Don’t be shy to walk right up and ask some questions. I have found some of these sellers to be some of the nicest people and are also willing to bargain. Also check any live local auctions or estate auctions in your area. I have a buddy who was able to pick up a Honda Mini Trail CT70 dirt cheap at a local estate auction because nobody else there seemed to show any interest in the bike. The only downside is that you usually don’t get much of a chance to research the bike or find out what kind of condition it was in, what it was used for, etc. So always be aware, and make sure you know what you may be getting yourself into! There are probably endless great places to find Honda Mini Trails that I have not mentioned in this guide, and I’m sure some of you who are reading this probably know of a few yourself. The real key to being satisfied with your purchase is: A. Knowing exactly what you’re looking for in a mini bike.B. Knowing your budget. I hope this guide has helped some of you future Honda Mini Trail CT70 owners out there. And if you are already a Honda Mini Trail owner don’t be shy to send out some of your own buyer’s tips and tricks or tell everyone about your mini bike buying experiences in the Honda Mini Trail CT70 forum. |
