CT70H won’t start

Saturday, September 4th, 2010
After a complete rebuild and many attempts to get this thing started with no success I assumed the problem was the carb. I have now switched the carb out with a newer one and still the bike won't start. There is spark and gas is getting to the plug. The cam seems to be in the right position. The points, condensor and ignition coil are all new. Any other suggestions as to what I might be missing.

I just picked this pile up for $300. Not sure what year I will be able to start working on it, because I have ten other bikes in front of it, but since it was my first bike to ever race I hope to one day finish it.

DAX shift pattern ?

Saturday, September 4th, 2010
The shift pattern is 1U 2D....1st to 2nd requires a double shift..1st - N...N - 2nd.

I thought something was wrong and have had the cover off a few times and everything looks perfect.

Is this correct ?

If this is correct...Why did they make it require a double shift to get from 1st to 2nd ?

CT70 Front sprocket and ignition system questions

Friday, September 3rd, 2010
I am taking my CT70 :red70: for a cruise tomorrow and decided that I should do a tune up. I just got the bike a month ago and haven't done any more than a little cleaning, oil change and run some Sea Foam through it.
I took the ignition side case off to set the valves and to put in new points and set the timing. The first thing I found was the case was just packed with dirt and crap around the front sprocket. I've cleaned that up. The front sprocket seems a little loose and wobbly though. Is that normal? My better judgement thinks it's not but I'll defer to some of you who know a lot more about these little bikes than I do.
Secondly after I rummaged through my tools and found a 30 year old flywheel puller that I had for my Honda Odyssey and to my delight found it works for my CT I pulled the flywheel and changed the points. I am looking at the condenser and thinking that I am seeing it soldered in. Am I seeing this right. The new one I have has two small tangs that the best guess I have is that they are indeed for soldering to. The bike has 1300 original miles and is running pretty good so I will wait till later for the condenser but I'd still like some expert insight into this.
I set the valves. I have most of the factory tool kit but the valve adjusting wrenches are missing. It is really a pain to do without those tools. Luckily I had a small SAE wrench that was a bang on for the locking nut 11/32 I believe. I used a tiny crescent wrench for the adjuster. What do most of the rest of you use for valve adjusting tools?

Need Help…DrATV “better” carb kit, now petcock lever is VERY stiff to operate

Friday, September 3rd, 2010
I am rebuilding a stock AT7B carburetor with the DrATV "Better" carb kit. After installing the Petcock rubber packing and the new spring washer the Petcock lever is VERY hard to operate with MUCH resistance when moving the lever!

Does the wavy shaped spring washer have to installed in a certain direction as it seems to not be symmetrical... sharper edges in or out?

Should I tighten the two screws all the way down or back them off to allow easier movement?... I would think to tighten down all the way!

Once fuel is in the carb will it lubricate and then loosen up?

What gives? :39:

Thanks!

Best way to clean up the exterior of a head??

Friday, September 3rd, 2010
Well..... I am at that point finally. Engine is together, piston and jug have been installed, Cam timing chain and tensioner parts are in place and looking good. Next comes the head. I have 4 to choose from and pretty much eleminated 2 of them. I am going for a stock rebuild at the moment versus a modified(which will come later based on available cash flow). Compared to the engine, the head looks like crap. I have quite a few head parts, covers etc. to work with.

What is the best method to clean everything up?? Is glass beading the only choice?? Can these be painted?? What are my (low cost) options??

As always - I look forward to your advice.

Stephen

Thank You

Won’t go back in gear

Thursday, September 2nd, 2010
After sitting idle for many years, I got my 1970 CT70 running, however I couldn't get it into gear. After draining oil, taking clutch cover off I figured out why. I shifted from 1st to neutral and now its stuck.. won't go into first..only stuck in neutural. I noticed that I did not tighten the nut on the clutch assy..
I am no expert on this.. but the nut wasn't that loose. Any thoughts?
