New to the Hobby/BusinessMonday, March 8th, 2010 I just got into this hobby/business a year ago. It's been a slow start, but I Just finished my first Z50 K1. I have decided to do 4 bikes (1-Z50 K2, 1-CT70 KO and 2-CT70H KO's) at one time this go around. I am going to do all 4 engines first. Here are a few pic's of the first, all most complete engine and three of the 4 bikes I am working on. I will try to keep an updated post/pictures of my progress. I am sure it will take the better part of a year for me to complete them all.
Topaz HK0 RestoMonday, March 8th, 2010 This will be a really slow build as I want to ride it for a while before I go all out maybe, plus I got to get rid of some other junk first. I gave it a bath yesterday looks a little better I need to really scrub it in some spots. I will be ordering a carb kit and a air cleaner sometime this week. I am pretty sure its been without a cleaner for 20 years or better so I am thinking the carb needs a real good cleaning. The fuel lines will be changed Any part thats supposed to be a color that it not or thats rusty or faded will be media blasted and painted for now and powder coated later. I really can't decide what I want to do with all the chrome since most of it is rusted and pitted. Like I said earlier I want to ride this thing and not worry to much hurting anything I just spent good money on getting rechromed or bought new. Anyway enough of that for now. Here are some pics before the bath I will have to get some after bath one later today. I have posted thesse pics in another thread but I figured I would start one just for the resurrection.
![]() ![]() ![]() PS One of the knobs that hold the handle bars in place broke off inside the bar itself. I tried to use an ez out but it broke to. So do I have an option besides a drilling it out and using a heli-coil? Chris First Ride 2010 - PIC - ChicagoMonday, March 8th, 2010 Well, after bringing it back to life all winter, the weather finally came around and I took my CT70 out.
TODAY: ![]() As I bought it around Thanksgiving: ![]() Replaced the rear fender, replaced the handlebar clamp (handlebars held on by a chain when I bought it), added a headlight, speedo, taillight, rewired it, painted the rims, new seat, fixed rusted out header and painted exhaust, used a torch to straighten the handlebars, rebuilt the carb and did all the typical tuneup stuff... I guess I did more than I realized! Felt great to finally get it out on the road. -Adam Z50 ressurectionsSaturday, March 6th, 2010 Well I've been lurking long enough stealing your information, I'll try to keep my rebuilds updated.
Note these will not be restorations, not even close. I'm just simply going to go through the two bikes to have a pair of reliable pit bikes, campground bikes, something anyone can jump onto and take to the next campsite or concession stand. They will be nice, but they will not be in new condition. I won't be spending a lot of money on them, and a lot of parts will not be correct. Some things will be done that will make the purists cry, and hopefully I'll keep enough of the spirit of the original to get a thumbs up from them as well. Started today with the 77. Swapped in a Lifan 83 cc manual clutch 4 speed unit. Kind of a pain. I'm sure there are some parts available to make it all fit perfectly, but I prefer to work with what I have. The motor bolted in fine. The carb and intake bolted on fine. The throttle cable though gave me a whole lot of grief. The throttle cable is meant to come straight up from the top of the carb. The original Z50 part has a tube to take the cable out at 90 degrees to clear the gas tank. Well I manufactured a tube to thread in, modified the cap on the carb, brazed peices together, modified my custom pieces. I pretty much spent the whole day trying to attach a throttle cable to the carb in a way that would clear the gas tank. Eventually I gave up. Trying to get to the right cable length using a Z50 cable and throttle while having a bent tube attached to the carb was proving difficult, and was going to result in having to shorten the cable housing. Not only that, but it was still going to require a dent in the gas tank. As it got dark outside I went for the simple sollutions. I grabbed a throttle and cable off an old Suzuki 50 that I had in the yard. Did away with the adjustment collar on the top of the carb cap. Drilled out half the threads in the cap to drop the cable housing in a little further. Bolted it all together and it worked fine with the perfect amount of freeplay. So, to make the tank fit. Not only did the bottom of the tank want to kink the throttle cable, the tank petcock also hit the carb preventing any sort of air cleaner to be installed. A little denting of the inside of the tank for cable clearance, and some bending of the fuel fitting to direct it away from the carb, and everything is happy now. I can hear the hate mail generating already. Not to worry though, the tank is not in the greatest of conditions anyway, I found several pinholes sealed with bondo today, and although I had previously been running this bike, the gas I poured out of it today had a whole lot of rust flakes in it. As I was sanding off the ugly brown paint, Bonus! I found the original Honda graphics were still there under four layers of different color paint. Yep they're beyond restoration, but I might just sand the rest of the tank to match and give it a clearcoat for that patina look :16: Making the manual clutch work was a bit of a challenge too. Not that it was challenging making it work, but getting someone to sell me a clutch cable was a challenge. Everyone kept arguing with me when I asked for the shortest clutch cable they have. Nobody wants to sell you anything without an application. When I try to explain its a Z50 with an aftermarket motor in it, I get the blank stares and they insist that I can't put a manual clutch on a Z50 Finally four bike shops later I found a guy who would finally just give me the shortest Honda cable they had. I clamped on a universal clutch lever, a little time adjusting, and I think it works very well. Then it was time to make it run. It seemed simple enough at the time. A lot of frustration, and a couple hours of consulting the internet, it seems I need a CDI box to go with this Lifan engine. Ahh the things we learn too late. I'm actually having trouble finding anyone that will admit a Lifan 86cc manual clutch engine exists, let alone someone that has a CDI box for it. I have found one supplier online who seems to have what I need, I just have to figure out how to ship it without getting charged more than the retail value of the part That is all for today. Enjoy :) ‘74 CT70 - Just finished restoringSaturday, March 6th, 2010 I originally bought a '70 CT70 K0 expecting to do a complete restoration on it over the winter, but my focus got shifted when I came across a K3 with less than 300 miles on it. Being somewhat lazy, and wanting a bike to actually ride, I decided to do a “quick” 6 week restoration. This is my first restoration project so I thought a bike with low miles would be the perfect candidate. My reason being the bike didn’t have time to be tampered with and every nut and bolt would be in its proper place. I started in the beginning of Jan. and completed the project 6 weeks later in Febuary. The bike is all original except for new oem fenders and fork boots, plus new paint and decals.
Soda BlastingSaturday, March 6th, 2010 Has anyone ever used soda blasting on the cases? I am currently working on a Candy Topaz Orange KO CT70 and decided since my bead blaster was being a pain in the a#$ to use, I used my soda blaster on the cases. These baby's look like brand new! Other than being a little more expensive, this soda blasting seems to be the way to go for everything from engine to frame. I bought the rig from Harbor Frieght for 50 bucks and it has worked great so far. The soda is about 35 dollars for a fifty pound bag. I will try to post some pictures later. I welcome any comments good or bad. This is only my second restore. My first was a Ruby Red K1 Z50 not the best job I have seen, but I am proud of it being that it was my first.
I suffer from two disorders; one, I have no patients and two I can't seem stop buying every Z50 and CT70 I see thats a decent deal! :monkey: QA50 BuildTuesday, March 2nd, 2010 I am in the process of redoing a qa50..still a little more to go on it.I have the tank ready to paint and color matched, mars orange..waiting on head and base gaskets to complete motor and decals for tank.still have a little buffing to do before I tighten down the last bolts...Has been a fun project...
Z50 Paint codesMonday, March 1st, 2010 I have a couple K1's and a couple K2 Z50's. Three of them will need to be repainted, and I'd like to put 'em back to OE.
I used the search function, but couldn't find a list of paint codes .. I'm gonna do my K2 first. It is an original Candy Ruby bike.. next will be a K1 in Candytone red. It would be nice to know the codes, that way I could get it mixed right here in town.. Marble's has a complete kit, any correct color for $325. Not sure if that is a good deal or not.. Randy also offers the silver for the wheels and such in a rattle can + clear. I'm gonna get a set of those for sure. Is there a place a person can go to get the exact codes for these suckers? My 74 CT70 K3 ProjectSunday, February 28th, 2010 I just picked up this 74 CT70 and this will be my first restoration project. I'm new and this is my first post but I found a lot of useful information on this board. I'm hoping to restore it to completely stock showroom condition, so we'll see how this goes. I'm open to suggestions on where to send the engine to for that part of the project.
Specific K1-K2 questions for the pro’sSunday, February 28th, 2010 1.) What tire came originally on the K1's and K2's? I've got a couple K1's that have "Nitro" brand 2 ply tires, one K1 with Bridgestone 2 ply tires, and one K2 with "tractor grip" 4 ply IRC tires.. could any of these be original?
2.) Is there a specific vin # where the bikes changed from round badges to oval badges? I've got two K2's... one with oval, and one with round. |
